Going With the Flow: Early Vascular Screenings
You come home from another round of Christmas shopping and you’ve got to put your feet up—immediately. Your legs are tired, aching and swollen.
Before you lay the blame on Santa, consider a vascular screening. This simple, painless procedure takes about an hour and can provide important information about your risk of venous disease.
Who should get screened?
Venous disease can affect all age groups, but if you’re over 40, you‘re at greater risk. You’re also more likely to develop symptoms if you sit or stand for long periods or if you regularly travel long distances.
Other factors include:
- Heredity
- Pregnancy
- Obesity
- Surgery or trauma
- Infectious disease
- Use of hormone medication
What should you expect?
- We’ll ask you about your medical history and any medications you take that could increase your risk.
- The screening is conducted using an ultrasound scan to measure vein function and check for any blockages. Ultrasound scanning gives a clear picture of soft tissues that do not show up well on an x-ray.
- We’ll also examine your legs for signs of varicose veins and other conditions that can contribute to venous leg problems.
